Impact Story: Michael Ekwang

20 years ago there was a brutal civil war in Northern Uganda, and the entire population was displaced from their farms and villages to camps for Internally Displaced People (IDPs).

Conditions in the camps were terrible.

  • Women would wait 2 hours to pump 20 litres of water.
  • Many children were malnourished. Some died from malnutrition or starvation.
  • No improved sanitation led to cholera outbreaks.
  • The camps had an ever-present feeling of helplessness and hopelessness.

Michael Ekwang is a fifth-year medical student, and Mountain Blue has been supporting his studies. Mountain Blue’s support of his studies will be a tremendous gift for his community, and for the country.

Michael says,

“studying medicine has always been my passion, I have always had this desire to serve humanity and save lives. The magnitude of suffering I witnessed people go through during the war in the form of malnutrition amongst children and other forms of illness made me believe I needed to serve in the area of healthcare.”

Michael and his wife have three daughters, ages 8, 3, and 2. All their family live in northern Uganda.
